History of Grama Panchayat
Kanjiramkulam Grama Panchayat is a prominent local self-government institution functioning under the Athiyannoor Block in the Neyyattinkara Taluk of Thiruvananthapuram District.
Early History & Pre-Independence Era
- Travancore Region: Prior to the formation of the State of Kerala, Kanjiramkulam was part of the former Travancore region.
- Local Development Committees: In 1938, several local development initiatives, including the Neyyattinkara Taluk Council, came into existence.
- Social Movement Groups: During the 1930s, two key community organizations were established:
- Gramoddharana Samiti (Village Upliftment Committee)
- Young Men’s Bureau (YMB): Most of the progressive local youth of that era were members of YMB. Notably, YMB donated the land required for the Kumuli Safe Water Project.
Panchayat Formation & Modern Era
- Establishment (1953): Kanjiramkulam Panchayat was officially constituted in 1953 following the integration of Travancore and Cochin.
- Territorial Merging: The panchayat was formed by merging the Kanjiramkulam village area with a portion of Kazhivoor village.
- Post-State Formation: Originally established under the administrative reforms of the Travancore reign, Kanjiramkulam was officially re-constituted as one of Kerala's early Grama Panchayats following the state reorganization after 1956.
